Dear all, Nice to see this forum! I'd like to show a breed from Vietnam - my country. That is Phuquoc greyhound. They has first description on the book "Les race de chiens" of Count Henry de Bylandt - issued in 1894. They hunts by speed, together with the very keened nose to find the scents. And they are extremely agile in the narrowed or mountainous area. Very good in jumping - climbing and swimming. Lacation hunter normal uses a pack of 2-3 dogs to hunt small-prey, and at least 5 dogs to hunt the big game as boar (in Vietnam, boar normally around 50kgs) They also wear a ridge in their back (like Thai Ridgeback dog or Rhodesian Ridgeback dog), but more different than the listed breeds. Sadly, at this time, this breed still kept & recognized in my country :( Following is picture of one best male in history: Posted Image Picture on some of them at this time: A dam ... Posted Image and her son of A-litter Posted Image and a couple in B-litter Posted Image Other pictures: Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image |

:welcome: I am pleased you found your way here, to tell us about the the Phuquoc Greyhound. I have read a little of the Thai Ridge back. What would be the main difference between the your dogs and the Thai dogs? Are they stilll mainly kept for hunting or are many simply kept as companions What sort of small animals would they be hunting? Would there typically be one dog per family and several different families group there dogs for a hunt or they are kept as packs? Regards Mark |

Hi all, Thanks for your welcome! Phu Quoc Greyhound (as they were named in the past) is not a typical greyhound - they actually are the primitive hunting dog, but they owns a very good speed and agility. So, at this time, we propose to call them Phu Quoc Dog (PQD) only. ===== Related to the question of Mr. Saluqi, I would like to show the main differences between the breeds (Phu Quoc Dog - PQD vs Thai Ridge back dog - TRD): 1) Ratio between height and length is 1: 1 with PQD - but it is 10:9 in TRD. 2) Bones of PQD is more dry than TRD. 3) Weight of PQD is lower than TRD Male PQD average highs aroud 53-56cm, and their weight maximum is 18kg - while a male TRD with average height of 57-58cm normally has the weight around 27-28 kg. Heavier, less drier bone and longer of the body results that TRD is less agility than PQD - especially in the small or rough area. 4) TRD's neck seems heavier that PQD - it could reduce the flexibility of movement of neck, with target to observe through out. 5) The feet of PQD is more flexible than TRD, so they could easily run in several area (like rough-hills, or wade over the mud..) 6) The stop of PQD is straight, that make them has a lighter head in the expression, and increase their angle-view. 7) Hair of the PQD is longer and more coarse than TRD - to protect them about the severe weather conditions, also to protect from tropical insects. I rarely see a PQD with skin problem - while TRD, especially velvet-hair TRD, often get the problems with their skin - but I need to recognize that, in my view, the velvet-TRD with qualify cares is more beautiful! ==== Above are some points of differences - the key factor are observe their movement. In my view, PQD has hunting-movement, while TRD only has showing-movement. At this time, because the forest in VN strongly reduces, so the hunting chances for PQD also reduces. In the countryside, they are kept as pack and still to be use for hunting some small prey (like musk-deer, snakes, bamboo rat, civet, weasel..) and sometimes is wildboar. In the city, though they are kept as companion dog, with number of 1-2 individuals in each family, but they just keep the hunting skill, and are skilled-hunter in catching rats, or other prey in sport. |
