There certainly looks to be something going on there, perhaps some ligament damage? I had a Labrador a good few years ago now and his tail went total limp for a few days once, it just hung there but before we went to the vet his tail returned to normal. I have no idea what caused it although his tail did curve to one side from when first got him at 9 months old. In as many years of keeping dogs I've never had a dog grab another by the tail, seem a strange thing for a dog to go for. What happens with his tail when he does a number 2? |

The Lab thing is called 'cold tail,' it's something different. This looks like a 'broken tail.' Does the dog still have feeling in the lower portion of the tail? Give the end of the tail a good hard pinch with your fingernails, if the dog reacts, there's still feeling. If there's still feeling, I wouldn't worry about it too much, the strain, sprain or break will heal. There will likely be a bump at that point in the tail. If there's no feeling, or reduced feeling, you'll need to get the dog to a vet. Dogs who lose the feeling in the broken half of the tail will often chew on it and damage it severely, so it may need to be amputated. It is also possible for a broken tail to have a very sharp kink or bend, these dogs should be taken to the vet to have the dislocated vertebrae put back into place. A small, shallow angle bend with a dog that shows no discomfort, I generally don't bother. One of my halfghans has had her tail broken twice; there's a slight bump there, but not loss of function. |

Broken tail is a possibility, you need to check as Devoid suggests. However, on first looking I was wondering if it is as simple as an issue with his anal glands. Get him to the vets for a check up Joanna |

cheers guys for the replies, ok i have squeezed his tail he looked at me like im a div and then yelped lol so i grabbed it where it kinks and rotated it left to right and up and down he made no noise at all just sniffed my hand!!! i again rubbed my hand over his tail grabbing and pressing every vertabra again he was fine i might just get him to the vet as a precaution i am thinking that it might be time for my black pup to get sold as he is really starting to hurt the puppy all the time even though the pup winds him up a lot i just wish he would turn on the black one and give him what for least he might leave him alone!!! so annoying....... saluqi i have no idea what happens to his tail when he poo's il have a look tommorrow and let you know lol :) |

Thanks devoid, I'll look into the Cold Tail thing even though Podge RIP is long gone now.
I know it's a strange thing to ask , I just wondered how the tail behaves when he goes for a poop as it would give an indication of control, as we all know the tail is typically held straight out for clearance when the go, does the kink become more pronounced or less so or stay the same. I just thought it might be the one time you would get a clear indication of what movement control he still as. Hopefully it is just sprain or at worst slight break and all will be well in a few weeks. Your black dog certainly sounds like he needs to tone his antics dog a wee bit, I'm sure in time Trix will be more than a capable of standing up to him. Whats the breeding of the black dog collie cross by any chance? I could well see Collie bred dogs taken cheap shots like that having grown up with Collies. |

saluqi, the black dog is a saluki whippet greyhound 11 months old, he will grab hold of anywhere to pull him over he's a little swine, as the snow has nearly gone now i will be taking him out lamping now so hopefully he wont feel the need to pull trix over anymore as i intend to knacker him out after the rabbits, if he does still persist in hurting trix il try the elecy collar again if that fails he's sold ive had enough of my little man being bullied about by that black one we'l see :) oh and on the poo front, his tail "kink" is a bit more pronounced when he goes but it still lifts out the way il take a pic for you if you want :lol1: |

So from the fact that the kink is even more pronounced we can assume the from the point of the kink the tail is hanging limp? Perhaps that is all your black dog needs, some work to take that edge from him. I remember when the foot and mouth restrictions were in place a number of years ago I had no end of in fighting in my pack due simply to too much pent up energy. |

That fits exactly with what happened with my Lab, he was very much overworked at the time it happened despite having a large team of dogs, some would in inevitably go lame and others would take the slack and we were working 6 day weeks. At least he retired fairly from this excessive work load. |

I think just leave it alone until the vet sees it- if doing things to it hurts him then best to just wait. As you don't know what's wrong with it I'd be wary of trying to do anything yourself, you don't want it damage it more. Poor boy, give him a piece of ham from me ;) |
