We have very thick fog at the moment so my planned walk on the big fields seemed a bit pointless as I couldn’t see more that 20 feet. So I thought I’d do a bit of mooching. Now my saluki pup is now 9 months old and is doing ok already catching numerous rabbits. However he has always been in the shadow of my lurcher bitch who to be honest is something special and was a much better dog at the same age. Now I know dogs mature at different rates etc so it is probably unfair to compare the two especially at such a young age. Today however I was mooching some very rough ground an old pit bing with rubble, very steep shale slopes etc. My spaniel pushed the rabbits out and to tell you the truth I was gob smacked, after over 30 years of running dogs but new to the saluki scene I could not believe how well my saluki run on this ground accounting for 4 rabbits run on the toughest ground imaginable, my lurcher who is 25 inches to the shoulder just couldn’t come to terms with the ground, the saluki however just seemed to sail over the ground and seemed to run just as fast as on the stubble. All this without a split pad or knock, I must admit my heart was in my mouth. Anyway I’m only writing this because it is the first time I have fully appreciated the difference in running styles and durability between the two. Edited by Sighthound, Dec 14 2009, 10:34 PM.

This is why I keep them, I rarely run mine on big fields where everyone would tell you is the only ground suited to Salukis. Most of my hunting is along steep railway embankments in plantations and like you have found they excell on this type of ground aswell as in the open. |
