Hi, stumbled upon the forum while looking for information on Saluki feed supplement guidelines. Currently have a 17 week old tricolour bitch with black and tan markings predominantly. I have previously had 6 salukis, 4 bitches and 2 dogs at various times, the last one of which died around 8 years ago. I got a non saluki dog ( maltese x cav) for my son as a playmate, but reallt ended up wishing he was a saluki :S. Now the kids are a little older ( 11 and 8 ) I thought a saluki was once again needed in the house. Could not have been happier than when we picked little saffie up from the airport - and am completely besotted again with this wonderful breed.

I live in South Australia my handle is workingmum, I am on the internet a lot, my real name is Amanda :)

cheers!

Thanks for the welcome :)

I had a look at the feed related forums, read with interest. Most of my previous salukis were fed on a mix of quality commercial kibble, raw meat and table scraps. The first bitch I had ( much adored Taaisha) was raised on commercial food mainly, she died from auto-immune haemolytic anaemia ( back in 1987 ). The rest all lived to over 16 and were in excellent health for most of their lives.

The breeder who I most respected used to feed lamb brisket and rice with veg, her dogs seemed to do well too.

The reason I was looking is my vet ( Pat Cole - who is a respected greyhound vet here) examined saff because she had a shoulder strain from an accident and observed she was not getting enough calcium. I have her on a powdered supplements now in addition to the fortified kibble and not inconsiderable number of bones she eats. He observed her joints ( at 17 weeks) were slightly thicker in proportion to her legs than ideal. She has grown well apart from that, great coat, well muscled, lots of energy and fantastic nature.

She gets raw lamb with bones, chicken, raw eggs, optimum puppy kibble, table scraps including fruit and veg which she loves. She loves spicy food lol, Our other dog will not touch veg or a curry.

That is a stunning wee Saluki pup you have, very striking. :Good:

Interesting cross the Maltese X Cav. We groom (dog grooming is my O/H and my profession) 2 Maltese X Lhasa's imported from Saudi and they are very similar looking.

yeah ollie is very similar to the maltese x shih tzus as well ( only bigger) he does not shed - he is a pretty good dog actually.

I put some pics I took of saff yesterday here http://mahalarama.blogspot.com/2009/11/saffie.html - I took the stack shot for her breeder - who wanted to see how she was looking.

She might get to go rabbiting early next year - wonder how she will go :)
