I'm thrilled I found this forum and since I started lurking less than a week ago I've learned so much already and learned that I have a long way to go. I don't have a saluki and neither have I ever owned a sighthound. But they were the first dog I ever fell in love with and I spent a summer doing nothing but researching them when I was 13. Since then my knowledge on dogs has grown and branched out from Salukis but they were always my first love and a whisper in the back of my mind. Then Vladimir posted the thread about his bitch whelping outside on a forum I sometimes post at, and even though it got pretty ugly there my interest was rekindled. But this time I knew more and understood that I didn't want a dog bred with conformation only in mind; so I started really looking at the working Saluki's and learning more about their history. So I shot an email off to Vladimir asking for information, books, sites etc with information and he's been a great help. Right after I sent that email I ran into the first Saluki (and Ibizan hound) I've ever met in person at my local dog park and she was beautiful. Her owner went to Israel to get her and she very much impressed me. It always amuses me how things seem to happen all at once So I've been researching all I can in the hopes of owning one in a few years. I've never been interested in hunting but I have to say that the idea of hunting with my dog and letting it do what it was bred to do is very tempting and I think that I would love to try my hand at it. Would make feeding whole prey a lot easier and cheaper. Though, since I have no idea about hunting or even where to begin, it might be a challenge. I've had Dutch Salmon's book on hunting with sighthounds recommended and will be getting that to start my education. But, even though I don't have a Saluki I do have dogs and since this is an introductory post I figured I would introduce them This is Kaylee, She's a two year old Dalmatian/Pit/Something mix that has tested my patience at every turn. From house breaking to counter surfing. She's my resident clown and has more quirks in her toe than most any two dogs combined have She runs along my bike with me for a minimum of 3-4 miles a day usually 5 or 6 miles and comes with energy to spare and garbage raiding to catch up on. She's an idiot savant that can forget her name one minute and open cabinets the next. But, she's my girl and I'm closer to her than any of the other animals. She makes me proud daily by being a very well behaved dog in public, even if she comes home and eats the wall after. Posted Image Posted Image Hannah is my six year old Mastiff/Rottie/GSD mix that has amazed me time and time again . She's a lap dog in her mind and makes the best pillow in the world. I have absolute trust in her and it's because of her that I have never worried about walking in the middle of the night. She shows uncanny intelligence and intuition and I only wish I had known more about dogs when I had gotten her. I could have had some major fun in some of the ring sports with her. She's saved me from a coyote that was way to brave, got in between a man and his child when he went to give the kid a slap, stood in front of my friend and I when a man and I got in an argument at the dog park. She's one of a kind and it's her personality that made me really take a liking to molossers Posted Image Posted Image Other than those two I have three cats, six ferrets and a sun conure Thrilled to be here and hope I don't ask too many stupid questions |

Hi there Lindsey, Welcome to the forum, your dogs are beautiful. I'm a newbie as well although a lurked for a while previously :D I don't have a saluki yet but also hope to have my first in a few years, but I do have a lurcher and have experience of other sighthounds, just not of the elusive saluki (yet!). And you're not the only one interested in sighthound hunting who knows nothing about it! I also know very little about hunting and am learning from scratch and just soaking everything in, but I love the idea of seeing your dog excel at what they were bred to and having that extra dimension to their lives and to your bond with them. It's definitely something I want to try my hand at when I get my own saluki to learn with. So I hope to see more of you as we both learn more :) Edited by Kare, Oct 26 2009, 12:42 AM.

Thanks for the welcomes, I plan on absorbing as much info as I can! Kare, I saw the pictures of your two, they are both lovely dogs. I'm with you on the hunting and it's not something I ever saw myself doing but the more I think about it the more I enjoy the prospect of watching my dog do what it was created for. I look forward to learning with you :) DeviodovTalent- Yep, it was Chaz and I have to say the more they railed against him the more I was fascinated by his dogs and how his views and beliefs on breeding, raising and keeping his dogs. |
