I went to a Pet Expo and was really excited to find out that there was a practice lure course set up, and Slim got to make three runs. It was set up so a handler held the dog, and the owner went to the other end of the course to call the dog if it didn't chase the lure. On his first run, Slim started out just running towards me, but about a third of the way, he speeded up and went after the lure. He ran past me, following the bags until they stopped. Of course, he had to play "can't catch me" for three more passes through the fenced alleyway! Darting and dodging past me and three people trying to catch him! Then he suddenly seemed to decide he'd run far enough, and came trotting back to me. We waited in line again, and the last run before his, was two greyhounds and two silken windhounds, running all together. That was VERY exciting for Slim... :greys he barked and whined and watched them go! When they were done, they came back and were standing about half-way along the course, to watch Slim run. When the lures were back in place, and he was set loose, Slim chased until he was about even with the "pack", then ran to the fence and was hopping and play-bowing, trying to get them to run with him :face slap: ...he ignored the lures but came to me when I called. We walked around the grounds for a bit, got a little drink of water, then went back for our last run. This time, he ran hard after the lure, clear til the end, and ran over the bags when they stopped. Yah! A little later, we were nearby when the operator was putting the equipment away. Slim saw the lures through the orange construction fencing, and danced around, trying to get closer to chase them again. I don't know how he would do running with another dog, but, at least today, he ended on a good performance. Can't wait to take him again! |

Sounds like you had a great time. I've tried it a few times with mine but it is a real hit or a miss whether or not they show any interest in the lure. Our wee bedlington goes daft for a fox tail lure, she is a lot fun lol. Keep us posted on any future outings with him. Regards Mark |

I would think it's logical that dogs who are used to chasing and catching (and eventually eating!) real live prey would be less likely to follow a plastic bag. No real reward there except for the excitement of the chase--which might be enough for some dogs. Slim has chased jackrabbits, but they dart into the thick brush and he loses them. As far as I know, he has never caught one. We are moving to Arizona, where the land is flat and open, and "hopping" with rabbits, so hopefully Slim will get a chance to catch some! Until then, we'll chase bags whenever we get the chance... |
