Thought it about time I introduced myself. Been looking around the site for a while in my ever increasing search for all the info I can get on salukis. :) I don't actually have a saluki, or even a saluki lurcher- but we as a family have a lurcher, Fionn, a deerhound beddy grey cross. He's 2 1/2 years old and a big dog at 31" tts. This is him: Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image He's a big dignified lazy lump and we love him. He's our first lurcher and is the reason for my love of sighounds now. He's from exmoor and what's known as an exmoor lurcher. His specific cross has been line bred for 75 years by the farthings, a father and daughter, for working the moors. We got Fionn from Jane Farthing who's a really great lady and who loves these dogs to pieces. (check out the exmoorlurcher forum if you're interested) We don't work Fionn, and at his size he's thrown a bit too big to be a really good rabbiter. I don't have anything against working at all, it's simply not a world me or our family have ever been involved in so never done and don't know much about if you know what I mean. But anyway Fionn's so far been way to lazy to hunt of his on accord- he actually used to watch rabbits run around him and not bat an eyelid... what happened to that working line eh :D ? But recently on our country walks he's been getting keener and keener- he's coursed a couple of rabbits now and though they got away I think he's got the bug for it. Not sure about the killing instinct though, still think his size would hamper him. But his 32" brother is happily hunting rabbits down in exmoor, so we shall see... And also not forgetting Tipton, our 10 year springer: Posted Image We also foster lurchers for Southern lurcher rescue which is really great. So to explain what I'm doing here, I love lurchers, particularly saluki lurchers, but have fallen big time for the saluki. I'm just trying to find out all I can and become part of a saluki community to learn more about them. I really cannot wait to get one of my own, but I have to go to uni first ^o) but I will be looking as soon as I leave when I have a break and time to raise a puppy/young dog. I love all salukis but I absolutely have an obsession with parti-colours, don't know why I just love that particular marking (yes I've had my eye on the stunning farouq ;) and the other beautiful parti-colours bred in the last few years) and it would be the icing on the cake to get that colour- I know life doesn't alway work that way but I can dream. It's really hard at the moment watching all the great salukis for sale go by, but it can't happen yet, still very hard though :( I'm just particularly interested in the coursing aspect of the saluki and learning more about that side of things. I admit to really knowing nothing about working dogs but I love and respect these sighthound's heritage and want to embace that side too and learn from those that know. I'm also interested in the coursing type of saluki and I've been really taking in all the genetics and pedigrees with interest. I will almost certainly be looking for a coursing line saluki for many reasons, but mainly because I want a healthy, sound dog that is fit for it's purpose. OK, I will never be a serious hunter and my saluki will be in a pet home BUT I will be living in the countryside and I want a dog that will be fit and active and can catch it's own dinner whenever it feels like and that I can progress with in this respect. So sorry for the essay, that's me and I'm hoping to get to know people, learn more and generally prepare myself for when I come back in 4 years or so and start looking for my hound. :D Can't wait. All the best, Hannah Edited by Kare, Oct 3 2009, 01:59 AM.

:welcome: Hannah, Thats a big handsome lump off a dog at 31"!! Nice springer as well, I am fond of Springers but I am happy to get my almost daily fix of them at our Dog Grooming Shop.;) I knew someone in the Scottish borders that had 2 deer hounds at 31" and 32" and these dogs could certainly fill freezers. Stick around and make yourself known on here and get stuck into your studies and you get a good job and the Saluki world will be your oyster (am I sounding like your parent's lol) and I'm sure you will get your Saluki. Regards Mark |

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Haha yes in all seriousness I will knuckle down and study hard, can't get my saluki without a good job. And thanks for the comment about our springer, it's usually Fionn that steals the limelight. :D Very glad I found this forum and there is so much to learn from here. I do intend to stick around for the forseeable future and make myself known, it's a whole new owrld for me so good to get to know people and make contacts. No doubt you'll all be sick of me by the time I actually the dog itself- I won't be too annoying, I promise. ;) |
