hello, you have probably had a few replies to this post as its pretty old now but i thought id just share my experiance with you anyway, (you never know it might help someone else too) i have no experiance of pure blooded salukis but have owned saluki x lurchers for 13 yrs now, i have coursed, lamped, hunted bigger game like deer and fox when legal of course and also took part in simlated coursing s thats my experiance :) firstly i always wait until the dog is fully developed imo over a year, next you need alure machine quite easy to make just a sarter motor, battery, switch and line with a pelt on the end, you will also ned to make some bobbins to turn the dog whilst running, no good just having a straight run!! i find lure coursing fun as it shows you any faults your dog has when it turns its pretty cool if you ask me, i know a lot of people say its a waste of time well thats fine but me personally would rather take the dog out on a lure than risk getting it shot or taken off you for coursing hare which again is now illegal, makes me laugh realy as these people who say your dog needs to prove itself before you breed etc is rubbish how can it when everything but rabbiting is illegal?? :hunterelma: make yourself a lure or buy one you wont regret it they are soooooo mch fun and get your dog really fit :Good: |

thanks for your reply to that post daks. Am thinking of setting up a lure course for Saff- but only when she is older . Was thinking 9 months would be enough but will wait longer now you have said wait till they are mature. We have a fox tail we were thinking to use, though there is more a likelihood we will let her after the rabbits ( they are a feral pest here in Australia, as are foxes). |

hi, 9 month is as you have said a little too young, if it was a lurcher then yeah id give it a go on a few sitters but not a pure running machine like a saluki for the extra few months wait you wll be increasing the dogs working life by a fair amount of time as you will of given its muscles, tendons, bones and lungs time to evelp fully also i reckon you could just put a bag on the end of the lure and it would chase it lol but a fox tail would be pretty cool to watch the dog run as it will bob about quite alot, i know from training birds of prey you generally put what you want them to chase on their training lures wether it be rabbit pelt on a dummy then drag it from bushes or duck wings on a lure then swing it around and let the bird take it, i dont see how this would differ much in a dog apart from the obvious that they will indeed chase anything, i think i will try to adopt the above method with my pup when hes a bit older as he is sssoooooo lazee its unbelievable, i am at present building a lure machine it is that powerfull it keeps snapping the frame it will pull a car its that strong however it kills the battery when you do this!!! lol soon as its done i will make a step by step blog on how to build yourself one and send you a link, hope thatl be of some use to you in the future atb..... gary :) |

awesome - a step by step would be great. As it happens Daddy was driving home through the country and brought a rabbit home today - and let Saffie chew on the legs and stuff. Saving the pelt for a lure as well. |

start mine on rabbit at 7-8 months on the lamp just a couple of catches a night then take them home, always finish on a good note. I do have a lure that i run them on some times but i would never run them on a lure at shows etc as they start barking when they see other dogs running which you don't want when your out working them . |

saluqi, does it depend on the maturity of the dog as to wether or not you start it working?? mine wont chase anytihng he is far to lazee!! workingmum, i can tell you what you need for the lure you need a starter motor (people say an inertia one but its upto you, mines off a modern truck with the solenoid on it already) some positve and earth wire, a welding spool, some line (i use 18 gauge rope) the bottom "eyelet" off a fishing rod (to guide the line back onto the spool a battery and a switch oh of course the frame :) |

well hubby is a mechanic so no probs on that score. The pup ( she is about 5 mths now ) has had this rabbit pelt to play with for the last couple of days and boy she loves it. I wish she had not brought it to bed tho :S We will wait until she is a bit older to lure course her. She has a few long scratches today on her flanks, I think from running like a maniac around the backyard and finding the edges...caution is a concept she will have to learn. |

hi, mine is changing ever sine i let him sleep with us and what a little character he's turning out to be!! i feed him on chicken wings in the morning and a mixture of dry food and tripe on an afternoon as i hope this will add a bit of wieght to him and stop him being such a skinny little rat! mine defo wants to be the boss of the pack so hewalks around growling athe others except for my bull x lol (he gets to him and licks at his mouth) he's such a puff!! i reckon the sooner you get a machine knocked up the better even if you dont use it because you have to get used to operating the switch etc to keep a constant speed which i tbh is only done through practice so when it comes to giving he dog a go you will know rouhly how to keep it smooth running should be really good :) have you got a video camera or anything so when the time comes you can video it and post it up?? i know its guna be a while but im excited for you allready lol atb....gary :) |
