Mine are on a predominantly BARF diet with puppy food supplement. OH came home with 15 rabbits last night - is there anything I should know about feeding rabbit to Saluki?

Skinned and gutted.

I feed them fur guts the lot, however I pre-freeze them about 1 month to kill off tapeworm etc before feeding. As they thaw out chop them into 2" slices (like swiss roll  ) thats how feed them not saying it's how it should be done just my way.

Ok they split a whole rabbit between them - by accident. I left the shed door off the latch and underestimated how high they can jump/ reach....they are only 5 months!!! :o

Couldn't pass this up either. That's brilliant to know about the freezing. I often think how lucky you are, Saluki, to get enough to keep all yours supplied with fresh whole rabbits. The reason for my post (to Sonneratti) was to say, by all means...leave the fur and guts intact! I guess you figured out how easily they can gobble them up!

I would assume so, I'm just wondering if your extremely cold climate might make parasites more able to survive freezing?

I've always used Drontal it's been over 6 months since I last de-wormed them and they are as clean as a whistle.

I don't de-worm them for de-worming sake.

Funny...I was just wondering what other Saluki owners used to deworm their dogs, and now it's being discussed here...I'm studying to become a licensed vet tech (taking the national test in June), have been "on the job" training for ten years, so lately have been taking in lots of samples to practice fecal exams on...when I did Slim's last month, he had tapeworm eggs, so I dewormed him with Drontal Plus...which he had been wormed with when he was about 8 months old. He got very sick, not eating, vomiting, and diarrhea for about a week afterwards...he got so thin, I really thought he might die. I had the vet look at him, and he was prescribed an anti-emetic, and Propectalin. The diarrhea subsided and now he is doing great. He's regained most of his weight, and is eating well. He also had a bad reaction...fever and malaise after his last vaccinations. Have any of your dogs had reactions to chemical treatments? Now I'm skittish about deworming or vaccinating him. Any suggestions?

Drontal plus has praziquantal in it, which is for the type of tapeworms caused by fleas. I've had several dogs that had a pukey reaction to praziquantal. I will only use it if I have a dog that has tapes and fenbendazole doesn't take care of it. There is shot for flea tapes you can get at the vet, I've used that several times and never had a dog react to it.

Panacur, which is fenbendazole, is very, very safe. I know many people who use it regularly on bitches in whelp to produce worm free pups. It will kill tapes from eating wild animals. I buy the kind marketed for cattle or goats, as it is much cheaper than buying it from the vet.

I never used to worm my dogs until I had a bunch of unexplained stomach problems with various dogs last year which turned out to be round worms. I used pyrantel pamoate, the 50mg per ml type marketed for human pinworms, and the problems ceased. If I see tapes in a dog I will use fenbendazole. I also know a number of people who use cattle Ivomec for general deworming as well as heartworms. Ivomec does not do tapes, though.
