Those dogs look like they could hunt!

Where have the bare pasterns and hocks gone on modern afghans? Why were they breed out?

I thought as much regarding the coat breaking with brushing, I imagine the coat could be stripped by hand in the same way that I strip the 'wool' from my saluki's shoulders, flanks and thighs after winter.
I have the book 'Hutchinson on Sighthounds' some good old photos in it of early import of afghans, I'd scan them and post them up but would probably get done for breach of copyright knowing my luck.

I'm sure the original Afghan could be revived without fresh blood if enough people got together and selected the right hounds, tested in the hunting field.

I suppose the dogs without patterning have a smoother look, although there are plenty of modern hounds that are patterned, it just doesn't go as high as the old hounds. I have three dogs that are patterned, with just the front of the pastern and the front of the hind leg right below the hocks short-haired. I saw some recent picture of rescued hounds that had very much the old look to them, but I don't know where they came from.

I'd like to import an aboriginal afghan. Maybe someday.

Another COO/Aboriginal Afghan, this one is in Pakistan. Interestingly the owner of this hound said this was his best hunter, better than his arabian Saluki's and the local dogs.

when you look at those dogs and compare them to the breed over here you then realise the damage the show fraternity has done to the breed here

It seems to be the first thing they set about doing when breeding for shows, they remove all that health diversity and make them look all the same and exaggerate all the points they like. Like angulation, coat, elegance, movement etc.

In my collection of pictures and my books there are pictures of Afghans who do not have topknots and who have hardly any coats like the two dogs on Flickr. Obviously there is, or was, a lot of variation in type in COO dogs. Mr. Wahab Kamal's pictures show several dogs without topknots and with extreme patterning. The early imports also had a greater variety of head types from shorter, broader heads without a roman profile to dogs with heads that look just like the modern ones. It is obvious that specific traits UNLIKE COO dogs have been selected for in the modern western populations of Afghan: long, skinny heads with no underjaw, lots of coat with little or no patterning, very long hind legs, etc. Dogs that exhibit COO type traits like severe patterning, lack of a topknot, shorter, coarser head, and more compact conformation are considered 'pet' quality and removed from the breeding population. Unless you live at my house :D I would like to cross one of my halfghans with a pure Afghan and see what I get in regards to coat; I'd like to get the topknot back just because I like it.

ETA: the following link has several pictures of Afghans that look very little like a modern western Afghan, even if you shaved one down. The second picture at the first link is a dead ringer for one of my halfghans.

It is a good link, ;) .

It'll interesting to see what you end up with crossed back to an Afghan.

I wish when then dogs were first brought into the western world that some had kept them going with hunting and coursing. <_<

when you consider mark the influence durak and the tepe gawra breeding had on the coursing dogs in the uk those desert bred afghans would surely have had a similar impact i would kove to find some footage of them coursing

I've seen others like this hound in Pakistan. Recently a friend acquired two bitches, one a sable/tancolour, the other off white. Both had black masks, long ear feathers, feathers on their legs & flanks & between their toes, and thin tails with wispy fringe on the underside. Beautiful hounds. The sable/tan bitch sadly had to be put down, she had a malignant tumour. The off white bitch has hunted hare successfully in the nearby Baloch hills.

They were acquired from gypsies who came down from the hills in winter. Wish I had pics.

Working on pics of the off white bitch. They hunt hare in the Baluch mountains. Unfortunately the off white bitch has developed a habit of eating the quarry before we can get to it. My Baluch friends have littele patience for this vice. So, having taken permission from "The Boss", I offered to accomodate her on my farm in Badin, Sindh. Should be able to get her in a few days & will take pics of her when she's properly coiffed. Right now she looks really ratty. A week, Inshallah ...
